Suddenly your stomach hurts and you're running to the bathroom non-stop? It's a total nightmare, especially before an important meeting or on your way to work. But guess what? You might be making it worse by eating the wrong foods. Today I'm dropping truth bombs on foods to absolutely avoid during diarrhea and the best recovery diet. I'll even share my own story.
1. Spicy Foods: Resist the Temptation
Spicy foods are a big no-no when you have diarrhea. Capsaicin in chili peppers irritates your gut and makes diarrhea worse. I once ate spicy tteokbokki and spent the whole next day in the bathroom. Regret city. Spicy foods damage the gut lining and slow recovery.
2. Cold Foods & Fruits: Skip Cucumber, Bitter Melon, Watermelon
Cold-natured fruits and veggies are bad during diarrhea recovery. Cucumber, bitter melon, and watermelon cool down your intestines and speed up bowel movements, making diarrhea worse. My friend had cucumber soup and ended up in the hospital. Cold foods chill your body and hinder recovery.
3. Greasy & Junk Foods: No Fried Food, No Fast Food
Greasy foods are hard to digest and stress your gut. Fried food, fast food, and fatty meats not only worsen diarrhea but can cause gut inflammation. I once ate chicken during diarrhea and felt way worse the next day. Skip these and go for bland foods.
4. Dairy: Watch Out for Milk, Cheese, Yogurt
It's best to avoid dairy temporarily during diarrhea. If you're lactose intolerant, milk will make it worse. I usually drink milk fine, but during diarrhea it always makes my stomach hurt more. Yogurt has probiotics, but cold yogurt can irritate your gut, so let it warm up or skip it.
5. High-Fiber Foods: Avoid Brown Rice, Nuts, Veggies
Fiber is usually healthy, but during diarrhea it's poison. Coarse fiber like brown rice, nuts, and broccoli irritates your gut and worsens diarrhea. I switched to white rice and felt better. Stick to soft, easy-to-digest foods until you recover.
Best Recovery Diet
When diarrhea subsides, choose bland foods. Rice water, millet water, or thin porridge are great for digestion and absorption. Noodles or dumpling soup are okay too. For energy recovery, slowly eat wonton soup or dumplings with more broth and less meat. Once fully recovered, return to normal diet. I drank rice water 3-4 times a day and felt much better the next day.
Diarrhea is your body's signal. Don't force food; let your gut rest. If diarrhea lasts more than 2-3 days or you have severe pain, see a doctor. Wishing you good health!
