Did you know that eating spicy or salty food after an abortion can seriously mess you up? I didn't. I thought as long as I rested, I'd be fine—but turns out, every single thing you eat can speed up or slow down your recovery. Today, I'm breaking down the foods to avoid, the foods that help, and my own real experience. No fluff, just facts.
What Happens to Your Body After an Abortion
After an abortion, your immunity drops fast, and you'll have postpartum bleeding (lochia). If you eat spicy, irritating, raw, or cold foods during this time, it can mess with your recovery. I actually ate spicy ramen a week after my abortion and ended up with stomach pain and heavier bleeding. My doctor firmly told me, “Avoid cold and irritating foods for at least 2 weeks.” Honestly, I haven't touched them since.
Foods You Absolutely Must Avoid
Dry pot, shabu-shabu, malatang, spicy rice cakes, ramen—all a big no. Cold drinks like ice cream and iced coffee are also off-limits. Malatang especially can irritate your uterus and increase bleeding because of the spices. Don't eat it. If you don't want to regret it like I did, remember this list.
Best Foods to Help You Recover
Fresh veggies, fruits, and high-protein soups are your best friends. Think crucian carp soup, black chicken soup, galbitang, and pork trotter soup. I ate crucian carp soup every day for a week after my abortion, and my energy came back so much faster. Black chicken soup is packed with iron and protein, great for preventing anemia. For fruits, go for warm-natured ones like apples, jujubes, and tangerines.
Rest and Follow-Up Tests: Don't Skip These
After an abortion, rest as much as possible and avoid intense exercise and fatigue. Also, a week after the procedure, you need a follow-up color ultrasound to check that your uterus is contracting well and there's no leftover tissue. I put off this test and ended up needing extra treatment for retained tissue. I regretted it so much. Please, get checked on time.
Lessons from My Real Experience
Post-abortion care is seriously important. One food, one rest—it can all affect your future fertility. Going through this, I learned the hard way that you can't take your body for granted. Don't be like me and regret it later. Take care of yourself properly from the start.
